Feb 15, 2017

Wheeler Clinic, the state’s leading provider of integrated primary care and behavioral health services, has appointed Athena Dellas Szczesniak, MBA, to the position of chief financial officer. Previously, Athena was vice president of Finance for the organization.

In this new role, Athena oversees all of Wheeler’s finance, accounting, revenue cycle, practice management and purchasing functions, while ensuring compliance with all regulations concerning the management and expenditure of federal and state funds.

“Athena’s extensive knowledge of health care finance, strong performance, and commitment to our mission make her a wonderful choice for this position,” said Susan Walkama, LCSW, president and chief executive officer, Wheeler Clinic. “Athena’s leadership has been critical to our efforts to efficiently manage our resources, navigate our continued growth, and proactively address emerging changes in how health care services are funded and reimbursed.  Her fiscal acumen will help ensure Wheeler is securely positioned to meet the needs of our patients and the communities we serve across Connecticut.”

Athena joined Wheeler in 2005, and her role within the organization has grown progressively to include a broad range of responsibilities within the areas of finance, revenue, accounting, audit customer service and call center operations.

Athena is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Prior to joining Wheeler, Athena was a financial analyst for the American Red Cross in Farmington, Connecticut.  She obtained her Master of Business Administration and bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Southern New Hampshire University.
